They are absolutely great dogs. Highly intelligent, devoted and loving. you have to keep them busy but they are totally awesome.

HAHA He's beautiful. A squeaky bear!! My German Shepherd boy is 6 months now and he has a similar bark. My next dog's gonna be an Akita…

I'm planning on getting one as well. I've owned and trained German Shepherds and I would suppose because the Akita is a proud breed they are a tad like the GSD in the sense that they need a firm handler. That's all I can tell you though cause I haven't gotten mine yet. For the off-leash idea, I say forget it. Working breeds that have 'firm-handler-needed' warnings can't always be trusted off leash so be careful about that. No dog should be trusted off leash in public no matter how good they are.

I might get an Akita, what are they like? Are they like Shiba Inu's? I have owned and trained a couple of them, and is your Akita good off leash?

Bubber25, they do chew things but not so bad. My Akita Maximus was house broken very fast. They are very dominant and stuborn. They are very, very smart and observant. You have to be patient with them. He will grow very fast. Train him well, hire a pro if possible. These animals are powerful and can kill other dogs and seriously injure people. They are great pets and protectors.Just be prepared and schooled on the breed. Please send pic or vid when you get the Akita, I will post a new vid soon
