Does anyone have stories of a Japanese Akita Protecting them or the home?
Witters, Man That Can! asked:
Please tell me about it. You can also mention any other breed of dog. I am not looking for answers unrelated to this. I don't want a list or commentary on why dogs should not be used for protection. I simply want to hear any stories where your dogs have protected you or the home. Especially from Akita owners but anyone can answer. Thanks in Advance.

Nope sorry I have funny chihuahua stories.
A couple years ago I remember reading an article in a Dog Fancy magazine about bullmastiffs. Bullmastiffs were the featured breed that month and in the article they told this story (paraphrased by me, of course):
A family had this young bullmastiff…I believe he was around 8-12 months old. The family included several young children and one evening the parents went out for dinner and hired a babysitter to take care of the kids. A burglar entered the house and started taking stuff (the kids and babysitter are, of course, scared out of their minds). The burglar went to exit the home and the bullmastiff stood in front of him and physically would not let him leave. It was kind of like okay, you can come in here, but there's no way you're leaving with our stuff.
You might be able to find the full story in the original magazine — check out your library to see if they stock Dog Fancy and have back issues.
i know you asked for dog story but i could resist. my cat stopped someone from breaking into our trailer when we weren't home one day. we came in with him sitting in the window sill about 4 times bigger than normal just growling away. we went out to see what he was growling at and noticed the pry marks around our window. we had to move because we weren't allowed to have cats. the second time we were living at my mother in laws house and the house was broke into. when we left our bedroom door was open, we had a new TV, PS2, digital camera, all kinds of good treats for any house thief. when we got home he was shut in our room, all our stuff was there, but the burglar took an old VCR from my mother in law. as they were leaving they got the plug caught under the door and ripped the whole cord right out. so they ended up with nothing of value at all. i think my cat was sleeping on the bed and when they came in the room, my 18 lb. got up growling and they just shut the door on him lol.
When we first got our Akita, for many months he just greeted everyone with a warm welcome, and i thought that he was going to break all the rules of the Akita reputation, and be an absolute useless protector. (Not that i minded, we did not get an Akita solely for the protection of family and home)
But…………..when he was about 6moths old we were away camping, once again normally anyone that went by he greeted warmly, (if you camp yourself you know what it is like, you talk to all your camping neighbours and meet many from around the grounds) one afternoon some drunken idiots came waltzing in to the camp site, just being mouthy dickheads, Kato at first wagged the tail and got all excited about new people to meet, but then he realised that we were not greeting these particular intruders………….well, I can honestly say that this was the first time ever that we heard Kato bark, and from a pup that we didnt even know had a voice, the deepest most attention grabbing WOOOOOOOOF came from the little boy, he then proceeded to march the intruders away from the site and away from us.
I think this was the day he found his voice and his desire to protect.
I will give him credit where it is due, he seems to pick up from us if visitors are welcome or not, and behave accordingly. He will let anyone he knows into the home or anyone new that is welcomed by us without reluctance, but will bring out this deep warning bark to anyone that is not so welcome or turns up when we are not at home.
