I think the towel is a good start, but putting the treat on the towel just teaches him to get a treat off the towel. You need to reinforce him for opening the door. Somehow, get him to tug on the towel, then give him the treat. Work up to only treating him when he pulls hard enough to get the door to open. Then it would be teaching him to retrieve a specific thing. But if he learns to open the fridge, he might decide to start raiding it. I think my guy would. Ok it might seem lazy but thoink about it this way, your buddies come over and your all sittin around doing whatever it is your doing and you say "beer" to your dog and next thing you know its coming around the corner with a cold one its mouth, that will be the coolest thing theve ever seen.
