One Akita?

JasonB747 asked:

quick video to show the difference between the American and Japanese Akita. I can't believe how many people think they have Japanese Akita when they have American!!

Japanese DO NOT have black masks, they only come in red/white pure white or brindle. Just read breed standard!!!!

some kennel clubs call them American Akita and the Japanese they just call Akita

Some info if u want to read further

the one photo, is that brindle or tiger stripe/tora gi(?)

wow what a differance.
what happens if they cross breed? and how did it happen

did the same thing happen with ShibaInu?

The Americans are bigger and I consider them stronger. They are also more strong willed and stubborn, so as far as training goes it's much easier with a Japanese, in general they have more easy going natures. I can't really say which is smarter, I've known clever and silly dogs from both breeds.

so major difference being the looks aside are any of the two smarter or more powerful? just curious

It's by Enya, I can't remember the song name I think it's "I will find you" or something similar.

BSLCLUB @ 6:33 pm

what is the name of this song and who sings it?

Hi, that means your dog is an American Akita. A lot of dogs in the UK and elsewhere are wrongly sold (and even wrongly registered!)as Japanese because the breeders either didn't educate themselves on what was going on in the dog world when the breed split happened, or they just chose to ignore it and continue calling their dogs "Japanese".

I still dont get it dude. Weve got a supposedly "Japanese" Akita with black face markings and a white stripe going all the way down from her nuzzle to all her body, which is also white. Sort of an inverse mohack. Maybe you could tell me OP.

I like the Akita Inu. It has more of a fox like face.

No, of course those are not the "only two" differences. It's easy to see the totally different body and head types, the difference in shape and size of ears and eyes, difference in tails, not to mention different temperaments. They are obviously different enough to be considered two seperate breeds or they would never have been split, so I don't think it's "nit picky" by any means.

You mean to tell me that all these damn arguments I've been reading on this flippin site and the only two differences between the American and Japanese akitas is a mask and color variety. Talk about snooty and nit picky.

JasonB747 @ 6:25 pm

Thanks. Yes I am aware of the colour terms, wanted to simplify it for someone who perhaps didn't know. It's much less confusing to say "brindle" than all the variations of brindle etc. I totally agree, I have owned both types and I love a really good American!

Nice video. Informative, to say the least. Regarding the colors of Japanese Akita there are red, white (which is a variant of red, not a pure white like a Samoyed), "tora", or tiger-striped, and "goma", sesame, or speckled. The latter two are bunched under "brindle". I've owned the Japanese type, but admire a *good* American-style dog. Problem is that a lot of those aren't "typey".

The american akita, does the black mask come from breeding with the german shepard or something to make them bigger than the japanese akita? Just wondering.

September 13, 2008

scraderz20 @ 2:28 am

american akitas luks far better

but an akita is a akita whichever they r the best dogs in the world !!

xKuroHaNoNex @ 11:21 pm

First thing is to socialize the dog as much as possible. They tend to be quite stubborn during training, and since they're so intelligent they get bored easily. Make sure to train the dog in different ways, never have the same routine. Akitas love food, or at least mine does..X3 so be careful on what kind of treats you give them. Play with the puppy a lot that will insure trust between the puppy and you, and a calm Akita is easier to train.

Oh lovely! He sounds like a big softie, just needs to learn some manners. I agree they are extremely responsive, I think they respond to things that we do and don;t even notice sometimes! Hope he finds a great home!

loopsntroops @ 9:52 pm

just collected another male jap akita today called "sushi"…big string boy but very under weight…very good natured but needs taught how to behave on a lead nearly on my bum twice ;oo..bless him. He is very responsive which I find to be a strong trait of the jap akita…we hope to team him with our current foster jap akita mix ceire…she goes to new home on 4th July..and will be missed very much x

royyoung @ 7:39 am

Japanese Akita looks a little bit like super sized Shiba Inu :D

September 20, 2008

JasonB747 @ 12:07 am

Yeah I agree! Thanks for helping akitas that need rescuing!

loopsntroops @ 9:01 am

I work with rescue for akitas and agree two different breeds..the jap is leaner and markings are far different plus temp is different on both breeds..american I think are harder to work with..more head strong than the jap / inu

September 23, 2008

JasonB747 @ 5:47 pm

Both breeds often have a high prey drive unfortunatly. My Japanese were not as bad with cats as my Americans after being introduced several times from a distance and meeting when muzzled until I could trust them. If u have really given socialization a good go I would try maybe using a water bottle to spray at them if they go within a few feet of a cat, but consult a trainer first, just to make them stop and think would be an improvement but u may never be able to trust them with small animals.
